FIRM NEWS

Our firm recently tried a case involving serious issues of domestic abuse. This case has prompted our firm to begin a relationship with the non-profit Center for Violence Prevention. On February 1, 2008, Carol Penick of the Women’s Fund of Mississippi, told the Downtown Rotary Club that Mississippi women suffer from a very high incidence of domestic abuse. I recently “blogged” on the subject and thought I would repeat portions of that blog here due to the extreme importance of this issue.

Listed below are some characteristics of abusers:

    • Extreme Jealousy
    • Controlling behavior
    • Unpredictable behavior
    • Unrealistic Expectations
    • Isolates the victim
    • Blames others
    • Minimizes or denies abuse
    • Cruelty to children or animals
    • Uses force during sex
    • Verbally Abusive
    • Sudden mood swings
    • Past history of battering
    • Threats of violence
    • Breaks or strikes objects

My professional experience is that the abusive personality is often concealed from outsiders by a charismatic personality. Abusers are manipulators and they can change their personality at will. This means that we all bear a responsibility to keep an eye on our Mothers, daughters, sisters and female friends and step in as soon as possible when we suspect abuse.

The Center may be contacted at 601-665-2950. Additional information can be found on our website at
