1. Remain
calm
2. Be
aware of the environment and areas where an armed intruder may approach (i.e. entrances,
exits, break rooms, etc.)
3. Be
aware of all evacuation routes, ensuring that there are at least two (2) exit
routes from all areas
4. If
in an office, stay there, locking doors and hiding, if possible
5. If
in a hallway, get into a room and secure the door
6. Evacuate,
if possible
a. Have
escape routes pre-determined, but be prepared to be flexible since routes may
not be available
b. Evacuate
regardless of whether others agree to follow
c. Leave
belongings behind
d. Help
others escape, if possible
e. Prevent
individuals from entering an area where the armed intruder may be
f. Always keep hands visible
g. Follow
the instructions of any police officers present
h. Do
not attempt to move wounded personnel
i. Call 911, when safe to do so
7. If
you can't escape, hide
a. Hide
out of shooter's view
b. Use
natural protection if shots are fired in your direction (i.e. facility support posts,
equipment, desks, filing cabinets, etc.)
c. Ensure
your hiding place will not trap you
d. Lock
doors, if possible
e. If
door won't lock, block it with heavy furniture, filing cabinets, etc.
f. Silence all radios, televisions, cell phones, etc.
g. Dial
911 and let the emergency operator know where you are. If you cannot speak,
leave the line open so the emergency operator can hear what is going on
8. If
you can't escape or hide, take action against the active shooter (this is the
last resort)
a. Act
as aggressively as possible against the shooter
b. Throw
items and improvise weapons against the shooter
c. Be
loud, yelling at the suspect
d. Once
you've begun acting aggressively, commit to your actions
